RECOVERY

After a poor start to the season, Barnsley manager David Flitcroft has said that the club definitely needs some new players in order to recover from this start. The club are just one place above the bottom of the table after having won just one match so far this campaign. They have been trying to bring in several new players in the summer. Two of the transfer targets have been Hull city striker Matty Fryatt and Southampton striker Billy Sharp. They were expected to come to Barnsley on a loan deal till the end of the season, but it has not happened.

Barnsley have the third highest wage bill in the division and they were expected to challenge for a promotion spot this campaign. The unexpected poor start by the club may result in the sacking of manager Flitcroft in the next few weeks. The club will be taking on Watford during the weekend in what could be the defining game of the season for the manager. If they lose against an inform Watford team, who are on the edges of the play-off place, this could result in the manager losing his job.

Flitcroft has said that the club has been working extremely hard to bring names in this transfer window.

“We have a board meeting on Monday and it will be a case of where we are at, what do we think we need. But certainly some strategical recruitment now in areas is needed. We do not have enough points on the board and the balance is still not what I am happy with. Even though the players have given us everything – the last three games have showed the players have given everything they have got – we have not amassed points from the last two games, which is disappointing,” said Flitcroft.

SHORT OF STRIKERS

Barnsley manager David Flitcroft recently revealed that his team is certainly short of strikers and they are interested in a couple of players at the moment. The club has spent a lot of money on several players over the last few weeks, but still their form has not improved. Barnsley have been struggling in the friendly matches so far. Out of the four friendly matches they have played as part of their pre-season, the club has lost one and drawn the remaining three. This dismal form has seen the club look at strengthening the squad in the strikeforce so as to score more goals.

Flitcroft has revealed that they are in negotiations with Hull city over the possibility of signing 30-year-old striker Aaron McLean. Hull city are looking to strengthen their squad after promotion to the Premier league. This will leave McLean with less opportunities in the coming season. Barnsley are looking to take advantage of this situation by signing the striker who was on loan at Ipswich last season. Hull city manager Steve Bruce has said that McLean is free to leave Hull city provided he can find a new club.

“We’re speaking club-to-club at the moment. If we can negotiate a deal successfully then I’ll speak to the player and see if he is right for this group. There’s a lot of players who you think will suit the group and then when you speak to them you realise they aren’t willing to work as hard as the guys we already have here,” said the Barnsley manager. Since moving to Hull city back in 2010, McLean has managed to find the back of the net only on nine occasions in the last 76 league matches.

However, his experience will be a major boost to Flitcroft as he attempts to avoid relegation.
